Director de cine y guionista francés. Comenzó a trabajar en cine a contar de 1909, y logró el esperado reconocimiento con Mater dolorosa (1917) y La décima sinfonía (1918). Sus películas ¡Yo acuso! (1918) y La rueda (1923) se consideran obras maestras. Se dedicó durante cuatro años a crear Napoleón (1927), su más grande obra, en la que utilizó técnicas experimentales para acentuar el movimiento cinemático. Las secuencias de batallas fueron filmadas con tres cámaras sincronizadas, y el filme fue proyectado en una pantalla triple para lograr el efecto tridimensional (cinerama). Además, esta obra fue pionera en el uso del sonido estereofónico. La película fue un éxito en Europa, pero la mutilada versión que se exhibió en EE.UU. no tuvo la misma suerte. Sin embargo, en 1981, se presentó la versión original con todo su esplendor. Las últimas películas de Gance, en gran medida controladas por los estudios, no son reflejo de su genio creativo.
